Using my product design skills to transform a outdated on-premise system into a modern, scalable SaaS platform for energy traders.

To align with Volue’s SaaS-first strategy, we rebuilt Auction Bidding as a modern, cloud-based platform. This transition ensures greater scalability, improved performance, and a smoother user experience—while enabling us to respond more quickly to evolving market needs and regulatory changes.

Challenges 🤔

The previous Auction Bidding solution was built on outdated, on-premises technology, making it increasingly difficult to maintain and evolve. It also offered limited functionality and did not support all bid types, which restricted our customers' flexibility and competitiveness in the market.

As energy markets grow more complex — with tighter regulations and the shift to 15-minute intervals — traders need tools that are fast, flexible, and easy to use. We rebuilt Auction Bidding as a modern, cloud-based SaaS platform that meets these demands. By combining automation, real-time monitoring, and an intuitive user experience, we’ve reduced manual effort and cognitive load — empowering traders to focus on strategy and seize market opportunities with confidence.

Collaboration across roles

Creating a successful product like Auction Bidding required close collaboration across multiple teams. I worked side-by-side with the project owner, back-end and front-end developers, as well as the sales department, key customers and more.
Together, we aligned business needs—such as budget, timelines, and available resources—with the complex requirements of professional energy traders. This ensured we built a solution that delivered both strategic value and practical usability.

Streamlining energy trading

We focused heavily on simplifying the trading process through thoughtful automation. By automating repetitive tasks like bid validation and portfolio tracking, we reduced the margin for error and boosted efficiency across the board.
This freed traders from manual routines, giving them more time and headspace to focus on strategy, risk assessment, and decision-making in high-pressure market environments.

A process built for iteration

Given tight deadlines, the complexity of market regulations, and limited access to end users, we needed a flexible and pragmatic approach to design. We worked in short, hypothesis-driven iterations, testing ideas within the team and with internal stakeholders before shipping to production.
This allowed us to move quickly without compromising quality. We also planned for post-launch improvements—factoring future iterations into both our time and budget—so we could continuously refine the product as we gathered more feedback.
